Brecon Sprint Triathlon for Max

On Saturday the 25th of May Team Maxwell successfully completed the Brecon Sprint Triathlon in support of the Mindstep Foundation! For many of the team, this was their first Triathlon and included a 400m swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run in hilly Brecon.

Team Maxwell included: Nico McCord, Tom Woolley, Lloyd Davies, Lydia Gillibrand, Jack Nuttall, Marcus Perret-Green, Patrick Knight, Tim McCord and Richard McLennan.

The Mindstep Foundation has been established in memory of Convey Law Managing Director Lloyd’s son Maxwell who passed away last year and will fund mental health research, awareness and support.  Over 80 men in England and Wales take their own lives every week – over 11 every day – over 4,000 a year.  The charity will seek to raise awareness of clinical depression with the funds raised going towards the following initiatives:

– Funding a research programme into clinical depression. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 and claims the life of 84 men in the UK each week. In the last 18 months we have lost three wonderful local young men to suicide – Ted Senior, Max Davies and “JJ” De Sousa Stayton.  The Mindstep Foundation will be working closely with a specialist research team from Glasgow University to help find answers to a pandemic that is so prevalent in young men.

– Funding towards aftercare for families following the suicide of a loved one.

– Holding support groups in schools and sporting clubs to raise awareness and help reduce the stigma of depression, with a view to encouraging and supporting young men and women to talk and seek help from  professionals and each other.

The team are close to achieving their £7,000.00 fundraising target for the event and would like to thank everyone for their support and sponsorship donations!

Lloyd Davies commented: “The last time I was at Brecon leisure centre was with Max when he was taking part in cross country running trials as an 12 year old.  I never for one moment thought that I would be back there without him just 10 years later, with him having been taken away from us as a result of clinical depression.  He was always such a happy young boy and man, always looking for fun and the best in everyone.  Our hope is that we can help others to curtail this terrible pandemic which claims the lives of 11 men every day in the UK!
We are planning a series of events over the next 12 months including a music festival, Kilimanjaro Mountain climb, Gala Dinner, charity rugby match and friends of Max are undertaking a number of sporting challenges in his memory and to raise funds for the Mindstep Foundation.

So far this year other fundraising events include an Alps Mountain Cycle challenge and a Three Welsh Peaks cycle and trekking challenge, which raised thousands of pounds for the Foundation. Local schools and clubs have been instrumental in raising funds wherever possible. The support and determination from these young men and women and the local community has been wonderful and overwhelming at times.  They and we are determined to do everything possible to help others.

Max’s first rugby coach at Monmouth rugby club Tim McCord will be cycling from Lands’ End to John O’Groats in July this year. Tim took part on Saturday and did very well for a 60 year old – a lot quicker than us 50 year olds!!  He will be raising funds for the Ted Foundation and the Mindstep Foundation.  Great Challenge Tim – thank you!”
